Serial Entrepreneur, Physician, Attorney, Pilot, Author, and TEDx speaker, Dr. John Shufeldt, MD, JD, MBA, FACEP has a deep passion for education.
He understands the need for students to have great mentors. Dr. Shufeldt mentors many young people and faces the same question from each mentee: “how did you do it?”
His latest Outlier Series professional development book, LeadershipYOU: Your Future Starts With You, answers that questions in-depth. In the book, Dr. Shufeldt shares 10 key principles that have guided his career and life. Dr. Shufeldt shares his knowledge for others to challenge themselves to do and be better. Everyone is capable of achieving their most fantastic future. Attainment comes from consistency of putting each principle into practice.
In the spirit of LeadershipYOU and his recent TEDxASU talk, Dr. Shufeldt created a career contest through social media. Four students, picked at random, experienced an opportunity of a lifetime. The LeadershipYOU Career Counseling Event included: a career coaching session over lunch in The Scottsdale Quarter, a helicopter tour overlooking the city, and a complimentary, signed copy of LeadershipYOU: Your Future Starts With You.
The four winners are college students with high aspirations. Each of them had a unique drive and sparkle in their eye, which made Dr. Shufeldt even more excited to share this experience. Not only were the students able to grow from this career coaching event, but Dr. Shufeldt did as well. A great mentor always learns from their mentees.

[intro music]>>MALIQUE: This past year, I wrote a book for kids, for children, in honor of my grandfather who passed in late December. I’m hoping it might become published and hopefully that can open up doors for me.
>> SHARON: Well, I’m excited to ask him what he thinks about like women leadership because I find that a challenge a lot in a lot of industries. So, I am going to ask him what his perspective on like for women to achieve their goals and to be leaders and to be taken seriously.
>>HANNAH: My question is just “How do you propose students, people, take multiple passions and combine them, instead of just having to being in one specific field?”
>>NATALY: You now, experience another success story and see, you know, how John is able to overcome any obstacles in the community and be as successful as he is today.
[music]>>NATALY: It was a lot of fun today, it was really nice to meet John and that a lot of different people with the same interest as me. I definitely learned to not give up on my dreams and to follow things that I am passionate about, and if I’m not comfortable, then just keep going forward.
>>SHARON: Dr. Shufeldt is very inspiring, he’s done so much with his life, and he mentions so many times that even though he failed and he fell down, he got up again every single time. It’s just inspiring to see someone like him who has many degrees, so much interest in education, so it inspired me to continue to do what I love to do.
>>MALIQUE: I’m super ambitions, I definitely learned that maybe I should live life and go to, you know, embrace the struggle, to be patient, and to work hard and don’t ever give up. I feel like I need to, need to do something in this world to become someone. Let my voice be heard in the world and you know, I’m just really inspired. I’ll ever stop chasing my dreams.
>>HANNAH: It was great, it was really a cool experience. To put myself out there and not be so concerned about having to be successful right away. And to not feel trapped in one specific career, just, if you are curious, go out and do it. Become a pilot if I want to, or become a doctor if I want, just do whatever. It is exciting so, I have a world full of possibilities in front of me.
