Book Review Appreciation Monday
This week, we’re highlighting Amazon Reviewer, ‘Cupcakes, Books and Wine,’ who said the following:
“Don’t rely on someone else for your happiness and self–worth. Only you can be responsible for that. If you can’t love and respect yourself – no one will be able to make that happen. Accept who you are – completely; the good and the bad – and make changes as you see fit, not because you think someone else wants you to be different.” ~ Stacey Charter
This is only one of the numerous quotes used to uplift, encourage, and engage readers, as well as reinforce the lessons in this book.
John Shufeldt’s excellent book is practical and well-researched. In a comfortable and humorous tone, he breaks down what it takes to be an outlier. These characteristics include humility, kindness, integrity, and persistence.
It gives necessary attributes of those of us outside the norm of everyday life, and goes into detail by providing examples, giving personal quotes (the “in my words” section) quotes by famous people ( the “in other’s words” section) as well other points and thoughts to stew over ( the “food for thought” section).
For example, in the chapter on efficiency, Shufeldt discusses the outliers Jeff Bezos,Amazon’s founder, and Frank Mars, founder of the Mars candy company. He then gives several suggestions to become more efficient: “preparation, anticipation, focus, flexibility, limitations, communications, and delegation.”
The failure chapter, was for me one of my more important lessons to understand. As well as one of my favorite chapters to read. He details the failures and subsequentsuccesses of Dr. Seuss and J. K. Rowling, two very common household names these days.
Outliers know success isn’t permanent and failure isn’t final and that to achieve you must persevere. This is a book is for anyone ready to take their career, or their life to the next level and be all that any one person can truly be.”
Thank you, ‘Cupcakes, Books and Wine’.
